You GO WHERE THE LOVE IS. You pay very close attention to the people, customers, commenters, and buyers who are paying very close attention to you.
Everybody is amazing at something — whether it’s being a loyal friend, crunching numbers, motivating people or throwing great parties. {And your genius is a cousin to your joy.}
But parents are only human, and we are striving to improve, and that’s what we want to teach our children; that we can be happy with what we have, but that if we fail and give in to our human frailties, that’s OK. We can just try to do better next time, and figure out a better way.
Automate late. Don’t add bells and whistles and functionality until you have to, until your people are begging for it, until your system will bust if you don’t throw some development dollars at it.
Every time you find yourself habitually switching to e-mail, stop yourself. Breathe. And then focus on your work instead. Your reward: you get a lot more done.
Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday are my full tilt focus days. This is when I do what I do best and what I do best generates my livelihood. On focus days, I write and write some more. I jam with fellow thinkers and media folk, and then I write some more.
I think it’s a really precious dualism that you can’t escape if you want to be wide awake. We want to go home…we are home. We seek approval…we seek to be free. We want to be independent and truly self-referencing but the truth is that we do need each other … because we are each other.
