Social media rage and judgement.
But like, loving about it. 😂
Loves,
If I asked 10 of my friends who are creating content as part of their business—some who are making millions in revenue, some of whom are laying off staff… most (not all) of them would say they are exhausted by the game. Pooped right out of the hustle.
Our DMs and vms sound like this:
FAWK THE ALGO. What the f*ck is happening to my following?
I’m soooo tired of posting. It’s so noisy.
I just want to make my stuff. I make gooooood stuff.
Please buy my gooood stuff. It’s good for you.
THERE ARE 3 KINDS OF CREATORS WHO ARE ONLINE
(This may be an over generalization.)
1. Creators who make on and off-line offerings—books, products, art of many forms, courses, retreats, things you can attend or things you can own and hold. These are Creators who have to create content in order to sell their creation.
They use social media to inspire and sell, sell and inspire. It’s a siege-like, unending cycle. They really wish a publisher or retailer would give them a fair profit share and do the heavy lifting for them of marketing and distribution. Or a juggernaut celeb would share their stuff and the orders would fly in.
This longing is mostly nostalgic and naïve.
2. Creators who create content to monetize the content. The family accounts, the couples giving advice, the make-up tutorials. The proverbial influencer. They get their followings up and they get sponsors and affiliate kick backs. They inform, inspire, or entertain, and they get paid.
AI is threatening these kinds of content creators because the robot can out-fake and out-produce them.
One of my friends in the wellness space—a reputable medical professional, says that they’re getting approached by more brands to sponsor them, because the brands are seeing that consumers are less trusting of “influencers.” People want to buy from real people with earned authority and cred.
3. People who have turned their personal lives into content for visibility and connection. I’m really concerned about this way of life. The sad irony here is that the addiction to performative relating is preventing the genuine connection that we all crave.
4. And a subcategory (I am not worried for these folks,) people who are sharing their lives with an online community because it’s a fun way to connect—and that’s the beauty of the global nervous system that we call the internet.
I write. I make a planner system you can hold. I teach within community. Instagram etc etc etc helps my team and me make a living and be philanthropic when it’s all gliding. I love the connectivity. I feel useful. It keeps me in touch with my community. I love eating up the beauty that I’m exposed to.
And! Social media makes my authority issues rage. Because the algorithm is a manipulative, controlling, muthr fkr of greed and propaganda.
How to stay sane in the social media circus?
There’s one question I ask of everything:
What’s the energy in this?
That’s it.
It’s ALL ENERGY WORK, MY FRIENDS!
You can feel if you’re being manipulated. You can smell desperation.
And you relax and lean in when there’s loving intention.
The complexity is not robots and fake followers. It’s that we all have mixed motivations. We are all serving up a cocktail of energies.
We’re serving and we’re selling. We’re healing and we’re profiting. We want to be noticed, and we want to be supportive.
Stay gentle AND discerning.
See it all with the eyes of love, babe. The eyes of love.
Because…
WE ARE ALL CRAVING TO BE SEEN, HEARD AND LOVED.
No exceptions. The writers. The preachers. The eyeshadow experts and the activists.
And I hope you’ll buy my planner—because it’s good for you.
WITH LOVE,
IT’S EQUINOX THIS MONTH!
