SACRED WEEKENDS comes out 2 Fridays a month—for deep seekers who want to keep it real. Only available here. xo D
My most repetitive soap box dictum the last 3 years: “Balancing your nervous system should be the #1 priority for everyone on the planet.” I like the term, “balancing” better than “regulating.” It’s less clinical and dictatorial. Feels more attentive and attenuating. I built a course about nourishing your nervous system. Get notified when the shop reopens in September.
I (try to) do all the balancing things: Rooibos tea, no phone in the bedroom, my spiritual practices, 4-6-8 breathing, no violent movies… I’m livin’ the heart centered life in an egocentric world. More specifically, I’m becoming an analogue girl in a digital world. Namaste, Erykah Badu.
My most powerful recent healer? a) 70’s music, gospel that I agree with, classical, and pure positivity tunes. b) vinyl records.
I grew up reading Supertramp’s philosophical liner notes. Leonard Cohen taught me about smoldering nuance. Salt n’ Pep were edgy because they wanted to, you know, shoop.
“Music these days is gross and vulgar,” I said to my son. Did I use the word vulgar? That’s so… uncool granny. But it’s cool to be aware. The current music scene—of course with some exceptions, is massively f*cked. The industry is rigged. The content is predominantly soulless—a sad range of vapid lyrics, to the basest immoralities, to s*tanick imagery.
Not good for anyone’s nervous system.
Brilliance from culture-observers Richard Osman + Marian Hyde on why BANDS HAVE DISAPPEARED from the music charts.
And why no one’s making long-form epic songs anymore.
Snoop on why overnight success sucks.
My Love, Prince doing the math for everyone about a broken system.
And… Spotify may be corrupt AF. I built all my playlists in there because it’s more user friendly than iTunes. And it was my micro-rebellion against Apple for being so un-philanthropic and eco-oblivious.
Until someone builds an alternative (please put me on your board of directors,) my playlists are parked on Spotify.
I’ve been going back to what feels pure and resonant. Pink Floyd. The Beatles. Fleetwood Mac. Joan Armatrading. John Martyn. Al Green gospel. New God- and heart-centric signers like Emma Nissen and Victory—LeAnn Rimes’ last two albums are sublime devotions.
What you feed your mind is as important as what you feed your body.
Sound, words and rhythm are an extremely powerful energy combination. It can be like superfood or super toxic.
Toxic ideas, vapid and manipulated messengers, chaotic beats, only add to the pollution stuck in the basement of psyche. That heavy energy sinks down into the unconscious mind and adds to the density. Which pushes into our thoughts, then speech and actions.
All media is a form of (potential) programming.
Energy follows thought… and thoughts are extra when you put a melody to them.
Listen for love.
“I want vinyl in my life again! My nervous system needs the warm sound. My body wants the crackle. And I want it on all the speakers in this place,” says me while looking at the $30 turntable + amp my musician son and I picked up from Value Village a few years ago; while batting my eyes at my tech-savvy husband, who I also picked up just a few years ago.
My man says, “You’re more romantic about this stuff than I am, but whatever you want, babe.” He has a degree of patience that’s foreign to me (blessing of ADHD.) It took weeks to solve, but we did it! And by “we”, I mean Will.
Parameters: I had six SONOS speakers in my apartment. I didn’t want more gear or old stereo speakers in the space. (Zen, people, Zen.) And I didn’t want to give SONOS any more money because (that turned out to be unavoidable.) Surely there was a way to unify the systems and generations. There is!:
(I’m not sponsored by SONOS… but I should be.)
Before I tell you the economical, gangster way, FYI: you could just buy this first gen SONOS TURNTABLE and you’re set. Let’s carry on:
