In the next few weeks I’m going to tell you a story about suicidal ideation and empathy (FUNS!) And since the world feels like a roller coaster on fire ATM, let’s do a palette cleanser edition.

FILMS I’VE LOVED ABOUT WOMEN LIBERATING THEMSELVES. 

Widow Cliquot. Barbe-Nicole Ponsardin Clicquot was the true founder of the Veuve Clicquot champagne dynasty. Think: 18th century boss babe married into madness, turns it all around to create a legacy. 

Firebrand. Jude Law in a fat suit as King Henry VIII. NOT HOT. Alicia Vikander playing his brilliant sixth wife Katherine Parr, and managing to not just keep her head, but influencing a nation.

Emelia Perez. This is the weirdest, most intense, musical (?) meets-twisted saga of oppression and self-expression. Once you get over the WTF IS this? Feeling, Emelia Perez will rip your heart out. Perfection performances from Zoë Saldana, Selena Gomez (yep, she was fantastic), and Karla Sofía Gascón (the first openly transgender actress to be nominated for an Oscar.)

The Last Show Girl with Pamela Anderson is a victory for her—and Jamie Lee Curtis. Such BRAVE performances! And Pam’s character is not as straightforward as you expect—she’s endearing, selfish, a touch delusional and tough as a velvet hammer.

Honorable mention goes to: Queer Eye

I’m 10 years late to the party but my brother from another mother, Joshua, harassed me, “You’ll cry every time!” until I watched an episode of the current Queer Eye. HOOKED. We do weekly episodes and order in Pad Thai—mostly because Jeremiah Brent has joined, and he’s such a deep dish (and we love to oggle his true love n’ style with Nate Berkus.)

HOW I’M MULTITASKING + HEALING

I sit at my desk or watch movies with the NOSE GLOW appliance stuck up my nose, in my ears and in my mouth. It’s A LOOK. Nose Glow is a red light Ear + Nose + Throat care appliance from my genius friend, Nadine Artemis’s Living Libations company. Mold and me… we go way back, so I’m happy to do all the things to remediate it from my system. I haven’t had one respiratory flare up this winter! 

A few years ago I started using the Higher Dose redlight face mask for my melasma and IT WORKED! Brown spots dissolved. So I’m sold on the efficacy of red light therapy. THAT SAID, melasma is not just a topical issue. It can be hormone-driven. I’ve been working for a few years with Dr. Sonya Jensen and recently Jenn Pike to get all my ‘mones in happy harmony. 

NEW MUSIC 

When someone suggests any kind of New Agey music to me, I’m… cautious. I find most of it too watery and astral. I like my spirituality grounded. FOUND SOME!

AWARÉ (pronounced awar-eh), is my favourite new find. Deep flow with a side of sexy.

REPORTING IN

I’ve found a great place to move to! (as per renoviction happening.) I’m a decisive cat with great habitat karma, but this decision was more stressful than usual. Not because all of the tenants in my building are being shown the door, but because my inner resources are stretched by the state of the world, some relationship grief, and too much social media (I’ve cut WAY BACK! #victory.) But my new pad is still on the beach and I’d say it’s one of my Top 14 Manifesting Miracles!

The countdown is on until my son moves across the country. Final month’ish. Last week I started ugly crying as I was rooting in the drawer for scissors I thought, Scissors! He will need scissors. And Band-aids! He will need Band-aids! 

Harper walks into the kitchen and knowingly says, “Oh mommm.” And then I was sure to add: “I’m going to miss you SO much. But my body is SO excited to have the place to myself.” Sniffle. Laugh. Cuddle. The mixed f*cking bag of motherhood that I’m honoured to be left holding.

Okay, partners… please remember that BREATHING INTO YOUR HEART is the most direct route to sanity these days and all the days. Don’t give in to fear. Feel it. Speak with kindness to your fear of the future. You’re the mama-papa of your emotions. Lead gracefully.
